This month we explore a common lichen called Lobaria pulmonaria. This lichen produces its color using the boiling water method. There are 3 ways to do this and we will experiment with 2 of them. In the first, you soak the lichen overnight, bring the lichen to a boil and then add fiber. The second is to layer the fiber with the lichen and soak overnight. The leader for this meeting, Lynne Noble, will set these two methods up on Saturday morning. If you would like to see  these procedures and/or add some fiber, come to the studio at 11 on Saturday; bring small mordanted samples. On Sunday, we boil both and talk about the processes.

If you haven't joined us for the study group, we pick one topic each month which is led by one of the natural dyer's in our group. This is not a class and does assume a basic familiarity with natural dyeing. We recommend that you take a class or do some research to have a satisfactory experience.

What to Bring:

small samples of mordanted fiber on Saturday is optional, show and tell to share.
