While many people are familiar with hand stitched and hand manipulated shibori, there is a way to create some of the same designs by weaving cloth and inserting the pull threads in as you weave. By pulling and tightly tying those threads it will create an area that will resist the dye, producing the shibori effect. On day one you will weave your cloth with pull threads and begin the gathering and tying process. On day two we will finish the tying and overdye with indigo. We will look at some experiments I have been working on by dealing with unusual threads for weft, additional dyeing before and after weaving, and see how unusual they can be.

Level: Beginner

Instructor: Joan Berner  bio

Materials fee: $0

Materials provided by instructor: Prereduced Indigo dye bath, weaving draftsCopy of notes

Students should bring: A prewarped 4 harness loom, sleyed and tied on. I will send a simple 4 harness draft to students prior to class. I would suggest something simple like 10/2 or 20/2 cotton or 10/2 or 20/2 silk, shuttles (2), bobbins, a pull thread that is strong but not too big (like 5/2 cotton - it will show in the dyeing), scissors, protective clothing for dyeing, long armed gloves for dyeing (past the wrist), I will have some. I will also bring an electric bobbin winder.
