Paper cutting has a long and varied history from the Chinese in the 4th century to modern three-dimensional cuts. One of my favorite artist is better known for his fairy tales: Hans Christian Anderson. He would make small paper cuts while reading his stories out loud, cutting free form into the paper without even drawing the image first. He would often gift his small gems as a thank you for dinner or a stay at a friend’s home.

In this spirit, we will make some small paper cuts to use as a work of art in their own right or make cards or stencils to use with a screen to print on fabric. We are close to Valentine’s Day so you could give your finished object away to someone special.

We will have knives, scissors and paper for everyone to play with. There will also be a few screens and fabric paint for anyone who wants to try to make a stencil and print it on fabric. Bring your own paper or fabric if you want to use something special.

Bring a light lunch or snack dish to share, and in keeping with our mission of sustainability, please bring your own plate, utensils, mug, and cloth napkin.
