Thinking Through Material: Flax Overview: Mellanee Goodman will present her research into material production on plantations in the American Antebellum Upper South. Through autoethnographic and archival studies she examines the artistry, practices, and techniques of the enslaved Black women, who created clothing, objects, and household goods for themselves, their families, and their enslavers. She will present her first foray into this study, a survey on flax, a plant raised on many plantations for the production of linen and other household goods, objects, and wearables. About me: Mellanee Goodman works at the intersection of craft and material studies. She specializes in the textile history of Black women during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the American Upper South.
