Madder has been used used to dye textiles for thousands of years. Textile fragments dyed with madder were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun. In this class we will explore the range of red and oranges produced by this magical root. We will first learn the best way to prepare both cellulose and protein fibers and then dye our samples in roots from my garden as well as madder extract. We will also talk about how to grow this easy to cultivate plant in your own yard.
